Toasts to 2010!  A long tradition is to click our glasses at the New Year, and wish our friends and family good fortune.  We tip our glasses to each other and someone makes the toast.  What toast will you give?  What if you’re in a worldly crowd?  I thought Common Toasts Around the World was so important, from a business and professional standpoint, that I included them in the Wine 101 chapter of my cookbook, Scratch That™ Seasonal Menus and Perfect Pairings.  Continue reading to see my common toasts around the world.  If you have more to share, please comment.   (Photos and Toasts by Connie Fairbanks of Scratch That.)

What do drink for toasts?  The simple answer is drink what you like.  If you have champagne tastes on a beer budget- go with sparkling wines from New Mexico, California, South Africa, Prosecco from Italy, and Cava from Spain.  You‘ll find many sparkling wines around $10 per bottle.  Make sure they are well chilled.  If you are splurging, go for Rosé champagne from the Champagne region of France where only champagne is made.  Anything outside of the Champagne region of France is of course sparkling wine.  If you have a favorite wine shop, ask them what they would recommend in your price range.  There’s something for everyone.

Why do we toast?  Weddings, birth of a child, a well-deserved promotion, finishing a marathon, an engagement, retirement, getting good test results, losing the weight, or finding a job.  It’s up to you.  No matter how you say it or why you do it- Cheers! In 2010.

Talk to you next week,

Connie Fairbanks
